昔、『俺たちは、科学技術という宗教の坊さんだ』と看破された研究所の先輩がいました。

この先輩は、「つまるところ、技術も宗教も、『よく分からないけど、信じられている』という点では同じだ」とおっしゃっていたのだと思います。
I think that he wanted to tell me that both technology and religion come down to be same from the view of unknown and received.

The above concept is similar to the saying a guru tell believers.

「科学技術という宗教の坊さん」であるところの技術者や科学者達には、共通の教義(セントラルドグマ)というものがあります。
Engineers and scientists, who are monks in technology field, have the common central dogma.
その一つに、「データを改竄してはならない」というものがあります。
One of them is "never tamper with data".
なぜ、この教義があるかというと、改竄したデータからは同一の結果が得られないからです。つまり、再現性が得られない。
The significance of existence is to guarantee repeatability in order to get the same results from the same environments.
再現性が得られないと、その技術を「なんか知らないけど、凄い何か」にまで発展させることができません。
No repeatability, no making it to expand "something unknown but excellent".
「なんか知らないけど、凄い何か」という観念こそが、私たち「坊さん」が
The concept of "something unknown but excellent" is
―― 世間様から、無条件の尊敬と畏怖を持って貰える、唯一の拠り所
"The only recourse to get unconditional respect and awe from the world"
なのですから、これを脅かす全ての行為は、科学技術という名の宗教に対する、大反逆行為なのです。
So, all actions that threaten the above are big treason acts against religion whose name is "technology".
一般的に言えば、「データを見やすくする」「美しい見栄えにする」というのは、褒められるべき行為です。
Speaking in general, "it is easier to see the data," and "to look beautiful" are acts to be praised.
しかし、そのような行為が攻撃されるのは、前述の理由に因る訳です。
That is the reason why the acts are attacked by monks in the same protege.

ただ、これは「宗派内部」の問題です。
