私は、ボーっとしているように見えても、大抵の場合、何か考えていますし、特に本を読んでいる時などに、挨拶ごときで、中断させられるのは、正直迷惑です。

When I am looked blank, I always keep thinking something. Especially when I read a book, I am annoyed to be interrupted for salute.

私に関しては、挨拶は不要です。少なくとも、挨拶されないことで、不愉快になることはありませんから、ご安心下さい。

As for me, I don't need your formal salute. I never have feeling of unhappiness without your salute.

但し、私の不愉快は、もっと別のことで、簡単に発動しますが。

But my unhappy feeling is going to be activated easily by other reasons.

一方、私の方から見ると ――

From the viewpoint of me,

『そんな風に感じる人がいるかもしれない』と考えてしまうと、どうしても、萎縮してしまいます。

I feel shrinking back when I come to think that "there are some persons who think "no salute is no polite".

怒られること自体は本当にどうでも良いのですが、それが原因で、仕事に支障が出るのはとても困る。

Thought I don't care being scolded by someone at all, I become in trouble if the trouble spread out to my tasks.

となると、「挨拶なんぞ、全くどうでも良い」と考えているこの私であっても、予防措置的に、他の人には、挨拶をしに行くことになります(実際に社会生活では、挨拶はしています)。

Though I think that salute is not important, I always go to someone for salute as a precautionary measure.

とすると、「『挨拶』をしている江端さんは、『挨拶』に価値を置いているのだ」と誤解されて、私と同じように考えている人まで、私に挨拶をしに来ることになる。

So I am afraid that someone might misunderstand that Ebata-san feels polite salute is important. Next, the person who don't think that polite salute is important will come to me for salute,

そして、自分の大切な時間を挨拶によって割り込まれて、迷惑を受ける人は、いつまで経っても減っていかないという、「負の連鎖」が永遠に続くことになります。

The count of persons who was interrupted by salutes and don’t like the polite salute, is not going to be reduced. So finally, the negative feedback will continue.
