先月、編集部の方とお合いした際に、興味深いお話を聞きました。

Last month, when I had a meeting with a editorial staff, I heard an interesting talk.

"Persons who live in IT field are apt to appeal to themselves.”

確かにそうかもしれません。自分の会社のサービスを絶賛し、自分の人生や自分の生き方を、高らかに主張される方が多いように感じます。

I could agree with him. The persons are likely to admire their company services, and applaud the life and living.

もちろん、それは自社のPRを兼ねているとは思いますが。

Of course, they want to advertise their company services.

『比して、エンジニアは、目立つことを好まれないようです』

On the other hand, engineers don't like to stand out in the crowd.

これも確かにそうかもしれないと思いました。

I also give him approval too.

自分の技術を過大に評価せず、他人に誇張して伝えることもなく、ただ技術を高めていくことにのみ興味があるという人間が多いです。

Many engineers hesitate to attach a high value to them and to exaggerate their fruits. They seem to be just interested in brushing up their technologies.

例えば、私が、その人の技術を、どれほど凄い技術かと説いても納得してくれず、私は、何回か、その人の代わりに特許明細書を執筆したことがあります(勿論、主筆発明者は、私ではありません)。

For example, however I have asked engineers who have amazing technologies to write the patent specification, he never accept my opinion. As a last resort, I have written for him.

打合せを終って、地下鉄に乗りかけたとき、ふと気がつきました。

After the meeting, when I was about to get on subway, I understood his intentions.

―― ああ、なるほど。私の存在意義は、「そこ」にある訳だ。

"I got it. My significance of existence is there."

メディアにコラムを寄稿するエンジニアというのは、確かに珍しいだろうと思います。

I think that the engineer who contributes columns to media is really remarkable.
